PostSubject: Wizarding Clothing   Sat 29 Mar 2014, 14:28

Note One: Robes:

Wizarding robes are closed at the front and worn like you would wear a dress. Nothing but underwear is worn underneath - as shown by the fact Snape's underwear was revealed when James flipped him upside down - and robes are mainly kept for professional jobs, uniforms and the older generation of witches and wizards. Harry notes has has never seen Mr and Mrs Weasley in anything but 'robes in varying states of shabbiness.'

Note Two: Difference between cloaks and robes:

Cloaks are not, as some people seem to think, simply open robes. They are designed to be worn over robes to provide warmth, provide extra comfort during travel and to give protection in the summer. Some witches and wizards choose to wear cloaks over wizarding clothing when robes are not practical. On top of the comfort and warmth provided by cloaks this is also to maintain some sense of formality as the magical clothing is often causal in look. It is also to maintain the magical distinction.

Note Three: Differences between 'Magical Clothing' and 'Muggle Clothing':

1) The clothes are made by magic.
Reasoning: Being available in Hogsmede which is a 100% magic
Reasoning: Available to Pure-Bloods.
Reasoning: Apparently distinctively magical in some way.

2) The T-shirts have logos / quotes / brands with magical themes.
Reasoning: Tonks 'Weird Sisters' T-shirt.
Reasoning: Ron's quidditch team themed stuff.

3) Clothing decoration (Logos / brands etc) probably moves in a way similar to how magical photographs move.
Reasoning: Clothing decoration is often photograph based.
Reasoning: Ron's surprise that sports theme decoration was stationary in the muggle world.

3) Instead of leather Dragon Hide is used.
Reasoning: Bill and Charlie having Dragon Hide boots and Jackets.

4) Items colour can be changed, within reason, without the need to purchase new items.
Reasoning: It says Arthur owns a couple of jumpers. Except he wears more than that of different colors.

5) Due to magic, clothing items can be patched to a much greater extent than muggle clothing which would fall apart after a while.
Reasoning: Tonks heavily patched jeans.
Reasoning: The Weasley Robes getting shabbier steadily but maintaining their structural integrity.

6) Magical baby clothing lasts a lot longer. Probably because, to some extent, it changes with the baby.
Reasoning: There are limited shops available for magical babies and therefore the lack of supply provides a hint towards its durability and what stock they do have lasting longer.

Note Four: Wearing Muggle Clothing

Due to the integration of muggle culture into the magical world the younger generation, as explained by Harry, are at home with wearing muggle clothing. Which leads to the question - why do magical children wear muggle clothing.

1) Magical clothing is not going to be readily available everywhere. In the case of the Weasley's they can likely purchase muggle clothing cheaply at the local village where as magical clothing would require a trip to Diagon Alley. Despite floo power making this relatively easy it is probably not practical to pop to Diagon Alley every time one of them wants a new pair of jeans or out grows their shoes.

2) Magical clothing is probably distinctive. Harry instantly recognized the Dragon Hide in Bill's outfit. Whereas most muggles would not recognize it was Dragon Hide they would probably see it was different. Plus magical themed logos / brands / quotes that are unique to the wizarding world therefore would stand out. So in muggle dominant settings, such as Kings Cross Station, the younger generation probably chose to wear muggle clothing as they do not feel like standing out.

3) When the older generation, who have not grown up accustomed to muggle clothing, try and wear muggle clothing it seems to end up with amusing results. Therefore those who adjust to wearing muggle clothing probably do so because they feel the need to be able to wear it without making a fool of themselves.

4) When Harry uses the term 'muggle clothing' it does not necessarily mean entirely muggle clothing. For example he is surprised that Bill's outfit is cool and notes it being combined with dragon hide. Therefore Bill's outfit was probably mostly magical. However some magical items fit in and look a lot more muggle than others which are distinctly magical. So when Harry says that the younger witches and wizards are at home wearing muggle clothing is is probably a mixture between true muggle clothing and the less distinctive magical clothing.

'Muggle clothing' is in part a term that notes the distinction between robes and magical clothing that appears 'normal' to Harry.
